Division 2 Functional Shutdown Plan

We have been working on getting 2 weeks of material together in anticipation of a functional shutdown.  The activities will be available online most likely via the school website.  They were designed to be able to be done independent of assistance.  Your child can select appropriate actives to complete from the list of prepared tasks.  The activities WILL NOT be submitted for assessment.  Textbooks, resources, etc. will NOT be needed for the functional shutdown.

We will not necessarily be meeting as a class via Zoom during this time.  This is meant as a short term stop gap until we can reconvene as a class.

Division 2 Long Term Shutdown Plan

I have been planning for this possibility since the beginning of the year.  The switch over should hopefully be seamless.  This would only come in if there was an provincial health order to do a circuit beaker shutdown of all schools.

During this long term shut down we will arrange for all students come in and pick up their textbooks (Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math) at home for this model to work effectively.

We will do Zoom a couple times a week for lessons and there will be additional Zoom tutorials for mathematics.

Language Arts:

Writing: our next unit was going to be on micro fiction.  I will be giving assignments and giving a lesson on Zoom.  The students will virtually share writing in breakout groups.  The next unit will be on poetry using the same instructional model.

Reading:  We will continue work on our independent novel study projects as well as some read and respond work sent via Google Classroom.

Math: Ideally we will continue working in our math groups.  If this does not work we will shift to a classroom model out of Jump Math supplemented with Khan Academy.

Social Studies: We will continue working out of our Social Studies textbook

Science: We will continue working out of our science text.

Art: Will be done independently at home.

PE: Will be done independently at home.

Career Education:  Career project will be assigned and will be done and submitted using Google Slides.

French:  We will do lessons via Zoom and have a practical/conversational session in breakout groups.

Week 11 (The End of Online Learning. . . Hopefully!)

Dear Division 2 students,

Week 11 Plan June 22 - 25, 2020:

I want to start by thanking everyone.  Your hard work, patience and care for each other has been outstanding!  This online / remote learning is not my favourite, but you have all struggled with me on this journey.  To the students, I am sorry we did not have more time.  I feel we had a lot of unfinished business.  You are all great students.  To the grade 7’s,  Good luck at Elphi next year.  To the grade 6’s, I will see you in September.  The grade 7’s set a high bar.  Let’s see what you can do!  I am looking forward to a healthy successful start to the next school year.

Thanks,

Eric Sullivan

Writer’s Workshop
This week you will work up a short story start to finish.
Start with Pre-Writing – The Brainstorm phase.  Come up with a plan for a story with a great plot, characters, setting, etc.
Draft out your short story.
Edit and Revise.  Seek assistance and advice from others.  Take their criticism and make your story better.
Email your final finished copy to me.
You can choose any genre.  I expect it to be 300-500 words. (1-1/2 pages)
Always consider the advice of all great writers.  WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW.  You have read books and had many life experiences.  Draw inspiration from these.  It could be a ski trip story with friends or a Zombie apocalypse story.  The sky is the limits.

Of course: READ, READ, READ!  Everyday!

• Friday:        Choose some activities from the list below in blue below.

Estimate the height of a basketball net. How tall is that in millimetres?
Remember:
1 m = 100 cm; 1 cm = 10 mm

Play the fun dice game Min-Max–imize!
This is a game for 2 or more players. Each player needs a paper and pencil and should draw the empty equation below on their paper. You will need one die for this game.
( ____ x ____ ) ÷ ____ - ____ =
Players take turns rolling the die. After every roll, each of the players have to decide where to put the rolled digit in their equation. The goal is to get the greatest answer possible. Once a digit is recorded it must stay in that spot. You can’t move the digits. Continue to roll the die until all spots in the equation have been filled. Calculate and record your answer. Remember BEDMAS when solving the equation. Solve what is inside the brackets first, and the divide before you subtract! The player with the highest score after 10 rounds wins!
Does your strategy change each round?
Try playing with a goal of getting the lowest answer possible. Would your strategy change?

A geometric pattern represents the number pattern 3, 6, 12, 24...
What might the geometric pattern look like?

Dice Difference – Play this game with a sibling or adult.
Decided who is player 1 and who is player 2. Roll 2 dice. To get the difference, subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Player 1 wins if the difference is 0, 1 or 2. Player 2 wins if the difference is 3, 4 or 5.
Play 25 rounds and record the results.
What is the probability of player 1 winning a round? Player 2?
Is this a fair game?
How would the results compare if you played 100 rounds?
How might you change the rules to make this game fair for everyone?

Imagine that you arranged five objects on a 4 x 4 cube bookshelf .
Draw what the shelf would look like with the objects on it from the front. Draw what it would look like from the back? How did you decide where to put the objects when drawing from the back perspective?

For Language Arts chose 4-5 activities from the list below:

Journal
In our modern world, it has been disheartening and depressing to watch the news in the last few weeks.  With everything going on in the world, especially with our neighbours to the South, we need to relook at our values and principals, both societal and individual.  I would like you to write about your perfect world or society, a “Utopia”.  What would it look like for you?  How would all people be treated?  What fundamental core values would govern all laws, actions, and systems in this society?

Read a fictional story of your choice today for at least 20 minutes.
Think about the setting, plot and characters. How does the author help you understand these story elements? How is this similar or different from how it would look in a TV show?

Thinking about your favourite TV show, brainstorm a list of possible episodes that you wish they had created. Choose one to write about. Think about whether you want to write a script, design a story board with speech bubbles or write it as a story. What elements from the original show should you include in your episode? What characters will be in it? What problem will happen? How will it be solved? Then write a summary of your episode including the major details and possible conversations between characters. What advertisers do you think would pay to have a commercial shown in your TV show?

Read a fictional story of your choice today for at least 20 minutes.
What are some elements from the story that you could include in your rough copy of TV show episode? Read your rough copy to a friend or family member. Consider drawing out some scenes so they can visualize how it would look on screen. Listen to their feedback and ask for suggestions to improve it.

Watch an episode of your favourite TV show. While you are watching take notes about the cast, description of setting, lighting and use of commercial breaks. Discuss each element you noticed with a friend or family member. Next, think about the different jobs that would be involved in creating the TV Show (e.g. script writers, camera crew, editors, actors, director). Which one would you be most interested in doing? Why?

Research the Fall of Ancient Rome. What happened, when and why?  Do you agree Rome fell?  Consider Constantine and New Rome (Byzantine Empire).

Dear Division 2 parents and students,

Week 5 Plan May 18 - 22, 2020:

Tuesday is a VERY important meeting (mandatory), especially for Grade 7’s.  Elphinstone will be doing a presentation and you can ask questions about what next year will look like.  Please take off any backgrounds or any screenshot images

We will briefly review core competency reflections on Tuesday’s Zoom meeting for those who have not completed this task.  It was due last Friday.

Please remember to use the “I can” statements (link below) as a starting point for your 3 reflections.  You have done 6 of these so far this year, so this activity should NOT be new for any student.  Make sure to support with anecdotal evidence of your growth this year.

Save your 3 reflections on MyBlueprint.
Grade 6’s as a journal post and grade 7 in your portfolio folder you created.

Continue reading and do a reading journal entry twice a week.  This week we start a book review project.  You will read a novel and give a summary about the entire novel.  You will give your opinion and recommendations for the book.  This can be done like a digital book advertisement, a narrated slideshow or a video of you giving a summary and recommendation.
